The nutcracker action works on the tongue and bars. Because the mouthpiece is in effect a loose ring as the reins are used the mouthpiece has to slide all the way around to where the bit is attached to the bridle before the bit leverage part of the action is activated. And because the cheek has to go to nearly horizontal the mouthpiece is severely pulled downwards into the horse's lower jaw. The bit is normally used with just one rein attached to either of the small bottom rings to achieve poll pressure.
