The mouth piece is 11mm thick which creates a light slender mouth piece to compliment the conformation of the horses mouth. This mullen shape has a generous forward curve to create even pressure across the tongue but allow enough room within the mouth to function correctly. The advantage to a loose ring cheek is that because the mouthpiece runs loosely on the cheek the pony can move the bit pressure off the tongue more easily also the signals that the rider gives have a slight delay before the mouthpiece activates.
